The Association is meant to be an academic and professional organization for those who are engaged in teaching and research in the field of Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka are carried out, mostly, in an isolated manner, by individual scholars or by small groups of scholars associated with the departments of Buddhist studies of the Sri Lanka university system. It was felt that there must be more inter-action and co-operation among these scholars with a view to bringing about more benefit to the to the field of study as well as the scholars themselves. It was also felt that there must be a mechanism to ensure the quality of research and teaching in the field and develop a sense of professionalism and responsibility among those who are working in the field.

With these objectives in mind an initial meeting was convened by Prof. Asanga Tilakaratne on 29th October 2001 in which about a dozen leading Buddhist scholars in the country participated. At this meeting it was unanimously agreed that a formal body consisting of scholars and academics should be formed in order to fulfill the above-mentioned need. On 31st August 2002 a general meeting was convened to which all the academics associated with the national universities and higher education institutes were invited. This meeting decided to formally establish the Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies.

The goals of the Association, as mentioned in its constitution, are: to function as the united Organization of Buddhist scholars and professional in Sri Lanka for the purpose of the advancement of Buddhist studies and research in the field; fostering interaction and cooperation among Buddhist scholars, professionals and academic organizations; to strengthen the bases of Buddhist education, and to disseminate Buddhist teachings within and outside Sri Lanka.

In order to become a member one must have, at least, a research MA in Buddhist studies or in a related subject, or one must be a teacher of Buddhist studies at a higher education institute. Graduate students in Buddhist studies are eligible for associate membership. People who have contributed to Buddhist studies through research and publication will also be considered for membership.
