Polonnaruva
Situated in the North Central Province, Polonnaruva, a city that rose into prominence in the 12th century is considered the capital of medieval Sri Lanka. After the decline of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, Polonnaruva became the next seat of rule. Here can be seen some remarkable architectural remains, sculptures and murals. The most noteworthy sites of Polonnaruva are the cluster of statues at Gal Vihara, Thivanka Image House and Alahana Parivena. 

Gal Vihara (Polonnaruva)

In the premises of what is known as the Gal Vihara (Rock Temple) is a cluster of Buddhist statues hewn out of granite. Ascribed to the 12th century, four main statues can be seen depicting different modes.
