An important place of worship in the Southern Province, it is believed that King Kavantissa built this Vihara. According to the chronicles King Vasabha built 1000 dagabas and King Datapatissa donated villages and lands to maintain this vihara. The mountain peak is considered a health resort and at certain times, thousands of bikkhus have resided there. According to folk lore it is said that when Arahant Sangarakkhita was sick and residing here, 8000 Arahants and God Sakra ministered on him. |
