Situated in the Southern Province, it is one of the 16 great shrines in Sri Lanka. Built by King Kavantissa, Tissamaharama Dagaba is 186 feet in height and 550 feet in circumference. It is said that the relic of the forehead of the Buddha is enshrined in the Dagaba. According to the chronicles, it is stated that during the 3rd visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka, He attained a state of tranquility (Samadhi) at the site of the Tissamaharama dagaba. It is also said that inside the dagaba is enshrined a tooth relic of the Buddha. The dagaba was dilapidated and renovated from time to time and for the last time in 1990. |
