MINDFULNESS OF IN AND OUT BREATHING

Now, we can use the object of breathing to develop insight too. The breath becomes the object of one’s investigation. Remember that the essence of insight meditation is to investigate with right mindfulness, and a tranquil and well composed mind.

Knowledge of Rise and Fall
As we note the breathing, we realise that the in breath arises and then it ceases then the out breath arises and then it ceases. Once again the in breath arises and fades away, making way for the out breath to arise, which too then ceases. So the arising and ceasing is a clear comprehension to one who keeps noting the breathing process. This is the norm of a function, behaviour or element. This is its nature. Always keep on observing the arising and ceasing nature of this function. This is the nature of all behaviours in the world. So by noting this nature one realises that all things are of the nature to arise and cease. This is the knowledge of rise and fall. A very important knowledge in this insight process. In fact a most vital one.
