1. Kindness
(Metta) - One must develop and practise
kindness to all sentient beings without
discrimination. Metta bhavana yields much fruits
during this very life to the one who develops it
and makes much of it.
2. Gifting
(Dana)
- It is also essential that one practises dana.
Otherwise one cannot overcome greed. One must
experience the pleasure and happiness of gifting
and relinquishment. Gifting is of three types:-
i) Gifting
of materials - this refers to the gifting
of requisites.
ii) Gifting of life - devoting one's time
and energies to a worthy and noble cause.
iii) Gifting of the dhamma - expounding
and teaching the dhamma to the others.
This is the highest of all gifts.
3. The
association of the wise - This is a most crucial
factor. This alone determines the path that one
takes. Those who associate the unvirtuous and
foolish, get on to the path that leads to more
and more misery. Those who associate the virtuous
and wise get on to the path that leads to true
happiness and peace. For this reason it is
essential that one seeks and closely associates
the virtuous, wise and noble beings.
