Alleviation of Poverty It is wishful thinking to presume that poverty can be altogether eliminated. Buddhism takes a realistic practical and a rational approach to the problem of poverty. This is a problem that has to be managed and as far as possible alleviated. There is much material in the Pali cannon to show the multi-dimentional approach to this end. According to Buddhism responsibility for the alleviation of poverty rests equally squarely on the rulers, the community as well as the individual. The religious teachers also have a role to play, in showing the path for solution of the problem which will not be detrimental for the spiritual progress of man. |
